McCabe Family Bible Selections

Since I included the Births, Marriages, and Deaths pages from the McCabe family bible that I now have in my possession, I thought it would be good to include images of what the bible looks like. My mother, Audrey Kathryn Lynn Schneider, was given this bible from her mother, Catherine Clare McCabe, wife of John Henry McCabe. I assume she was the person who passed it in to my mom. When mom died in 2016 my older sister Lynn Schneider Stevens obtained possession of it and she sent it to me last year (2024) for safe keeping.

The bible was published circa 1880 and the trim size of the pages are 9-1/8" x 11-1/2" and the book, measuring the text only is 2-5/8" thick, published in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, by John E. Potter and Company, No. 617 Sansom Street. Original size images are included here.

Lacking an official publication date in this bible I date the publication of this John McCabe bible circa 1880 based on a few clues found in its pages. The frontice piece image is of Pope Leo XIII whose papacy was from 1878 to 1903. The first page of the Calmet's Catholic Dictionary shows a copyright date of 1879. Third, the publisher, John E. Potter and Company, was in business from 1866 to 1881. Finally, the "Approbation of Archbishop James F. Wood, of Philadelphia, was archbiship from 1860 to his death in 1883. To me this narrows the book's publication date between 1879 to 1881 (or 1883). So I chose to state the publication date circa 1880.
