Note 1:

This description kindly provided by Gerda Hansen:

An Honorary Consul General is appointed by both the foreign government as well as the US. The Grand Duke of Luxembourg, then HRH Grand -Duc Jean (now there is a new one as of this year [2001] - Grand-Duc Henri) appointed my husband on Sept 19, 1995. Our state department here had to approve of and clear the appointment. This was done. This makes Donald a member of the diplomatic service. Our office acts for those of the Luxembourg government that wish to use our service. We do passports for Luxembourg citizens as well as host government people (the Royal Family, etc.) and many groups that visit in our three states of IL, IA and WI. Donald attends many of the diplomatic workshops and is a member of the Consular Corps of Chicago. In fact he is the only "Honorary" appointed by career consuls as an officer in their organization. He is second Vice Dean. That makes him third in line, sort of like the Speaker of the House... Honorary simply means that he is an American as Head of Post instead of a person from that country. At one time when the diplomatic service began here in the US there were only "Honorary" positions. It was at a time when the other places in the world could not afford to have offices abroad. Most of the countries in the world still have Honorary positions, but also have career positions at the same time. Most of the time they are simply Honorary Consuls and not H. Consuls General. The "General" part means just what you think it means - a General over all the other Consuls. Honorary offices have to run without compensation by the appointing governments. Luxembourg pays for our phone and mail expense and that is all. We therefore have employees that volunteer their services. There is a Chancellor, a Cultural and Public Affairs Attache (me [Gerda]) and an Administrative Officer. All three of us are very busy volunteers. With Luxembourg such an active member of the EU and very visible in Europe, we are kept very busy. Last year we had a special event every single month. It was a bit much, of course it was also the year 2000.

When Donald accepted the appointment we talked it all over with our children . . . . It has all been worth the hard work and the effort. Just a week ago we were in Washington DC on the balcony of the Speaker of the House. We meet with many of the leaders of the world. We stayed at the Embassy during our visit and slept in the bedroom of Grand Duchess Charlotte! She stayed in the US in exile as the family is related (very distantly) to FDR (Roosevelt).

There are many stories.
