The photograph on the left dates to the early 1950's. It is taken in a north westerly direction, and includes parts of the villages of Skokie, Wilmette, and Glenview, northern suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. As a point of reference, you will notice in the lower left hand corner, the Professional Building located within Old Orchard Shopping Center. The shopping center was still under construction at the time, as evidenced by several parking lots on its north side still unfinished. Across the center of the photograph from left to right is Eden's Expressway. Paralleling it, but slightly lower in the photograph, is Skokie Highway. Following them to the north, you will notice that they converge just past another shopping center known as Eden's Plaza. Along the upper edge of the photograph, and just to the left of center, are the runways of the Glenview Naval Air Station. It was still an active base at the time this photograph was taken. There are three highways that cross over Eden's Expressway in this photograph. They are, from left to right: Old Orchard Road (Harrison Street), Glenview Road (which ended at Hibbard Road at that time), and Lake Avenue. Between Old Orchard Road (Harrison Street), and Glenview Road, one finds Old Glenview Road. It is along this road that the log cabin was located, that the family of Anton and Gertrude Schneider first lived in when they came to America in 1846. The tree that stood next to their cabin has long since been cut down and removed, but can be found within both of these photographs. It is the only tree standing by itself on the north side of Glenview Road, just before it ends at the frontage road that runs along the east side of Eden's Expressway. The photograph on the right was taken in 1926. (The lower left shows completed sidewalks, imprinted with the contractor's name and dated with the year of 1925.) It is taken in a south easterly direction, and also includes parts of the villages of Skokie, Wilmette, and Glenview, with Lake Michigan in the distance. What is remarkable, is what is NOT found within this photograph. There is no Eden's Expressway cutting across the farm lands, no Skokie Highway, or Old Orchard Shopping Center. These are all things yet to come. The road in the bottom center of the photograph is Glenview Road. Following it eastward you cross over the North Shore Railroad, and then come to a sharp turn to the right. On the outside of this curve one finds the home of Matt and Anna (Schneider) Hoffman (see arrow in both pictures). In front of their home was a small saloon run by Matt called The Curve Inn. Continuing on down the road, you would find that it was cut off by the construction of Eden's Expressway, with the remaining portion renamed Old Glenview Road. This note provided by Richard L. Schneider, Buffalo Grove, IL. Photos provided by Wilmette Historical Society. |
