On a bright and clear early morning July 1, 2011 I visited Holy Cross Cemetery where Martin Schneider, his wife Gertrude, and family members are buried. Here are photos of their monument and headstones. Martin came to America at the age of 18 (in 1846) with his family settling north of Chicago. Martin married Gertrude in 1851 and moved to Dearborn, Michigan, Springwells Township. Holy Cross Cemetery is in the heartland of the Ford Motor manufacturing complex, in the area Martin's descendants have lived and died. -- John J. Schneider
The Schneiders are buried in Section D, Lot 70 and measures 20' x 20'. The monument lists the buried as: Martin Schneider, Sept 24, 1830 - Jan 27, 1906; Gertrude, wife of Martin Schneider, April 28, 1831 - Nov 24, 1907; John Schneider, April 13, 1861 - Sept 23, 1883; Susan Roulo, wife of J.N. Schneider, April 11, 1868 - Oct 17, 1899, Lena Mohr, wife of J.N. Schneider, Nov 25, 1870 - May 22, 1902
The Plot diagram lists 14 bodies buried in Section D, Anna J. Schneider, Mary A. Schneider, Catherine Hackett, Anna L. Luyckx, Winifred Merrill, Leona Schneider, Susan & Frances Schneider, Martin Schneider, Gertrude Schneider, John Schneider & John Hackett, and Albert C. Luyckx. Also in grave # 2 is included "Baby Schneider," listed as grave # 7, a male who died within an hour of death, of asphyxiation, probably because of the umbilical cord around his neck. I could only find headstones for Winifred, Anna, Catherine "Kitty," Albert Luyckx and Martin and Gertrude. These had been pushed a few inches into the ground and took some work to uncover them from dirt and grass as the photos here show.
