Richard Schneider writes: Joseph's biographical record printed in the Wilmette Life for the 75th anniversary (9/18/1947) lists an eleventh child by the name of Katherine, and indicates that a twelfth child died at birth. A check of the baptismal records of St. Joseph Church verifies that Katherine was born on 4/15/1880. Her name also appears in the 1880 Federal census, but no additional records have been found.

The following is taken from a photocopy from the book "Genealogical and Biographical Record of Cook County, Illinois. Lake City Publishing Company, Chicago, Illinois, 1894", pp.592, 593:  (See the Notes of Explanation)

"JOSEPH SCHNEIDER, who follows farming on section 31, New Trier Township, Cook County, is one of the worthy citizens that Prussia has furnished this country. He was born March 13, 1841, and is a son of Anton and Gertrude (Huerter) Schneider, who were natives of the same locality, the former born in March 1799, and the latter in the same year. In 1846 they crossed the Atlantic, and after a stormy voyage reached the New World. Making their way to Chicago, Anton Schneider purchased one hundred and thirty-three acres of land on section 31, New Trier Township, buying the farm, its crops and stock for $900. There Mr. Schneider carried on farming during the greater part of his life, although by trade he was a blacksmith. His death occurred in 1875. In the family were eight children, three sons and five daughters, of whom two sons and four daughters are yet living, namely: Martin, a retired farmer, of Detroit, Michigan; Katrina, widow of Anton Carpenter, of Chicago; Anna Maria, wife of William Fackelde, a carpenter of Muscatine, Iowa; Dorothea, widow of Paul Huerter, of Gross Point; Joseph, of this sketch; and Anna, wife of Max Hahn, a shoemaker of Evanston.

"Joseph Schneider acquired his education in the public schools, and has become well informed on all questions of the day. He was only five years of age when he became a resident of Cook County, and since that time he has lived in this community. He now owns and operates fifty-five acres of the old homestead, which he has placed under a high state of cultivation. This is less than one-half of the farm which his father purchased for $900.00, but his tract, at a low estimate, is valued at $10,000. Upon it he has erected a two-story brick residence, a good barn and other outbuildings, which are models of convenience and which attest the enterprising spirit of the owner.

"On the 4th of February, 1864, Mr. Schneider was united in marriage with Kathrina Keil, who was born in Prussia, March 20, 1845, and is a daughter of Mathias Keil, who was born in the same country, and came with his family to America in 1846. In 1862 he took up his residence in New Trier Township. Twelve children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Schneider, of whom eight sons and two daughters are yet living, namely: Anton, who was born January 14, 1865, and is a farmer of this community; Margaretha, who was born November 28, 1866, and is the wife of Joseph Schaefgen, a carpenter, of Gross Point; Maria, born February 12, 1869; Mathias March 28, 1871; Peter, May 17, 1873; Joseph A., September 1, 1875, John G., January 3, 1878; Wilhelm J., June 27, 1882; Frank, January 30, 1885; and Adam, January 11, 1889.

"The parent's and their children are all members of St. Joseph's Catholic Church of Gross Point. Mr. Schneider has been a Democrat since casting his first Presidential vote for Stephen A. Douglas, but has never sought political preferment. He belongs to the Catholic Order of Foresters and to St. Joseph's Library and Sick Benefit Association. He is a prominent citizen of the community, widely and favorably known, and the best interests of town and county receive his hearty support and co-operation."

Joseph owned the Woodland Tavern on West Harrison Street as attested in this newspaper article about a reunion party of his children and their families. (The article is not dated but probably 1920's.)

Richard Schneider provides this undated photo of which includes Katherine Schneider. As Joseph is not included it is assumed this is taken after his death in 1914, but before 1921 when Katherine died.
